2022 will be the year of Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra, the successors of the much-appreciated S21 as well as the company’s top of the line devices. As much as curiosity is all about the upcoming foldable Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, the Galaxy S family continues to be the most advanced. Not so much in the shapes, but in the specifications, especially the photographic ones, more and more demanded by the tech enthusiast users. And it will not be outdone by an S22 Ultra for which it is expected a further upgrade of the main photo module, but not only. Let’s see, then, what should be the news that Samsung is planning for the next batch of flagships for next year.

Update 23/01: A new leak reveals what would be the European prices of Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra. Find all the details in the “Design and Display” section.

All the news coming soon for Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra

Design and Display

Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ would feature a 6.06″ and 6.55″ Full HD+ screen with LTPS AMOLED technology. It would be more valuable the screen of the Ultra model, 6.81″ Quad HD+ (3088 x 1440 pixels) with LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology. A feature that would allow adaptive refresh rate. In this way, the screen could vary from a minimum of 1 Hz to a maximum of 120 Hz, adapting according to what’s on the screen to save battery.

For the form factor, there would be a shift from 20:9 to 19.3:9 and a higher screen to screen ratio. If the base model S22 will have a maximum brightness between 1,000 and 1,300 nits like S21, S22+ and S22 Ultra will break a new record, peaking at 1,750 nits (S21+ and S21 Ultra reached 1,300 and 1,500 nits respectively).

Looking at the front instead, as much as we continue to rumble about the much coveted in-screen camera, the S22 should carry on the punch-hole display of the current models. Among the specs we’ll also find the new Gorilla Glass Victus+ protective glass, a frame called Armor Aluminum and an ultrasonic ID sensor.

When it comes to aesthetics, Samsung is used to renewing the design every 2 years. And since with the S21 series we saw a restyling compared to the previous generation, with the introduction of a new aesthetic language for Samsung’s top of the range, there will be no upheaval with the S22 series.

Unlike the last generation, all three mhe S22 and S22+ will feature a glass body, thus abandoning the glass-like polycarbonate called “Glasstic” for the non-Ultra models. The colors will also change: S22 and S22+ would be available in Black, White, Pink Gold and Green, while S22 Ultra in Black, White and Dark Red.

To reveal the features of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series there are the always punctual renders of OnLeaks. The S22 series carries forward the aesthetic stylistic features of the S21, in particular with the rear camera module that maintains the positioning “traffic light”. The difference lies in a detail, namely that the module no longer converges with the side frame, being there a detachment between the two elements.

The same goes for Samsung Galaxy S22+, while with Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra there will be a more radical change. Unofficial images confirm the presence of a quad camera with laser autofocus without the rectangular module to contain them anymore. Instead, the sensors will be almost flush with the body, except for the metal ring that surrounds them to prevent the lenses from scratching.

The other novelty of Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will also be in the form factor, more squared and therefore tending to the Note series, as well as the integration of the S Pen (which we talk about in the section “Hardware“) with a slot in the body of the phone. Recall that even S21 Ultra supports the S Pen but without a hole in the frame, so it requires a special cover to carry it with you. But since the S22 Ultra will be thesuccessor to the Galaxy Note series, Samsung has thoughtfully compensated for this lack of the S21 Ultra.

Dimensionally, for all three models there would be a slight downsizing of the body and weight. According to the leaks, S22 would measure 146 x 70 x 7.6 mm for 167 g, S22+ would rise to 157.4 x 75.8 x 7.6 mm for 195 g and finally S22 Ultra to 163.3 x 77.9 x 8.9 mm for 228 g. To top it off, here are the first live photos of all three models alongside:

According to the latest rumors, the series consisting of Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra will be as always divided into Qualcomm models and Exynos models. In a good part of the world there would be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, made with 4 nm production process by Samsung itself. The SoC contains an octa-core Kryo 780 CPU with the new ARM v9 architecture (1 x 3.0 GHz Cortex-X2 + 3 x 2.5 GHz A710 + 4 x 1.8 GHz A510) and Adreno 730 GPU. As for the memories, leaks talk about 8/128 GB and 8/256 GB for S22 and S22+, while the Ultra variant would have 12/128 GB, 12/256 GB and 16/512 GB denominations.

Let’s talk now about the Exynos 2200, again produced at 4nm by Samsung. Inside there is always an ARMv9 octa-core CPU (Cortex-X2 + Cortex-A710 + Cortex-A510). The real novelty is the GPU Samsung Xclipse 920, the first on a smartphone made with RDNA2 architecture. The collaboration with AMD will allow this graphics card to support new features such as ray tracing and variable rate shading: find everything explained <a href=”https://gizchina.it/2022/01/samsung-exynos-2200-ufficiale/” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow noopener”>in the dedicated focus.

However, the availability of the Exynos 2200 would not be wide and therefore Samsung variants would arrive in few geographic areas, including Europe.

Like S21 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will also have full support for the S Pen, thanks to Wacom technology integrated into the screen. This time, however, the nib will be embedded inside the body in full Galaxy Note style, as revealed by the first live photos. According to the leaks, the new stylus will boast much improved responsiveness, with a delay of just 2.8 ms compared to the 9 ms of the Galaxy Note 20 series.

As for the battery, the leaks revealed us 3,700 and 4,500 mAh units for Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+, so lower than the S21 range but by virtue of the smaller size. It wouldn’t change for Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, inside of which we should find a 5,000 mAh unit.

To increase seemed to be instead the charging standard. After being criticized for not being up to rivals such as Xiaomi, OPPO and Huawei, S22 Ultra would be able to charge at 45W, a power that would allow it to reach 70% in 35 minutes. On the contrary, the two models S22 and S22+ would stop at the usual 25W. We will certainly find the 15W wireless charging, even reverse, as well as the policy of not offering a charger in the box.

Given that it will arrive in early 2022, the triptych composed of Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra can only be based on the upcoming Android 12. It will be interesting to see if Samsung will also embrace its new Material U aesthetic style. This novelty will allow Android users to customize the UI more, choosing the various colors of the UI also based on the selected wallpapers. In addition, new security features will be added, such as the ability to lock microphone and camera for your privacy. A version of Android that will again be enriched and customized by the future One UI 4.1.

Under the photographic profile, there were rumors of an alleged collaboration with Olympus, a well-known Japanese photo production company. A partnership that cannot but bring to mind what Huawei has done with Leica, vivo with Zeiss and OnePlus with Hasselblad. But the reality is that the Japanese house would have denied this indiscretion. Moreover, unlike the initial rumors, the S22 series would not use either a sensor from <a href=”https://gizchina.co.uk/2021/09/samsung-isocell-hp1-camera-smartphone-200-mp/” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow noopener”>200 MP nor an under-screen camera.

According to leaks leaked so far, Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ would have a triple camera with Samsung’s new 50 MP f/1.8 primary sensor GN2, 1/1.57″ sensor with 1 µm pixels. It wouldn’t change the wide-angle, 12 MP f/2.2 1/2.55″, 1.4 µm pixel and 120° FoV, while the 3x telephoto would be 10 MP f/2.4 with 1/3.94″ sensor and 1 µm pixel. The selfie camera, then, would be 10 MP f/2.2 with 1/3.24″ sensor with 1.22 µm pixels.

For Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the other hand, there are rumors of a quad camera with an improved version of the 108 MP f/1.8 1/1.33″ Samsung HM3 with 0.8 µm pixels. To this sensor will be combined, according to a teaser, a new lens called just Super Clear Lens, made of Gorilla Glass 5, which will then allow a greater sharpness, in a very similar way to the lenses that Zeiss has made for vivo and its X70 series, then bringing much closer the photographic quality to that of professional cameras.

The wide-angle lens would then remain the same 12 MP of the two basic models, would be maintained the dual configuration 3x/10x for the hardware zoom. There is talk of two equal sensors, namely a new 1/3.52″ Sony sensor with 1.12 µm pixels, f/2.4-4.9 aperture. Finally, a 40 MP sensor should be retained for the selfie camera.

Another noteworthy innovation would be the use of a new optical stabilization. The Wide Shift OIS technology would allow the camera to have a 58% improved stability, thanks also to the intervention of artificial intelligence. An AI system that would also affect the focus, being able to predict the movement of people to keep them in focus even in Portrait mode. Still talking about video, leaks talk about the possibility of recording clips in Super HDR 12-bit at 68 billion colors, with more realistic colors and improved brightness quality thanks to the Super ISO Pro technique.
