In a statement freshly sent to the press, Sony has shared the sales numbers for the PlayStation 5, confirming the solid rumor mill we had recently heard. Yes, the console is indeed what we call a “bestseller”.

Not long ago, VG Chartz reported

that the PS5 had sold 10 million units, which was impressive but unofficial. However, Sony has just clarified the situation in a press release, confirming this staggering score.

Since the launch of the machine last November, ten million PlayStation 5s have been sold, making it the fastest-selling console in Sony’s history, breaking the record set by the PS4, which took 39 weeks to sell (compared to 35 for the PS5). Jim Ryan, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment, thus states:

Although the PS5 has reached more homes faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for the PS5 continues to outstrip supply. I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges around the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for EIS.

The Japanese firm can therefore rub its hands together and look forward to a bright future: as a reminder, its CEO Kenichiro Yoshida admitted to colossal ambitions with the aim of selling more than 22.6 million copies in a year: thus, the PS5 will be able to dethrone the scores of the first PlayStation, in 1998.
