Panerai’s Submersible collection, derived in its own right in 2019 from its spin-off from the Luminor family, is defined by its strong personality as an instrument watch associated with the most extreme adventures. So we should not be surprised by its association with Jimmy Chin as brand ambassador, mountaineer, environmentalist, film director and National Geographic photographer, to whom it pays tribute with two limited editions of its diver flyback chronograph.

Despite the 47 mm of its robust and impressive case, and thanks to being made of titanium, it is more comfortable than we might think at first. The Panerai Submersible Chrono Flyback – J. Chin Edition (PAM01207) and Submersible Chrono Flyback – J. Chin Xperience Edition (PAM01208) feature the collection’s usual cushioned shape, with a prominent bezel, the iconic crown protector and chronograph pushers located on the right caseband at 8 and 10 o’clock. While the PAM01207 features a brushed finish, the PAM01208 exhibits a black DLC finish to which it adds a ceramic ring bezel. The latter watch will include the opportunity to join a week-long excursion with Chin in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where guests can participate in a series of activities including wakeboarding, a hands-on outdoor photography seminar, and dinner at Chin’s favorite local spots.

On the back, both models feature a blind back engraved with a pair of crossed skis, an American flag and a craggy mountain symbolizing Chin and his accomplishments. As befits the Submersible, they are water resistant to 300 meters.

Both dials feature a matte stone gray surface with a distinctly grainy texture. This neutral matte tone is accented with cool ice blue for the chronograph elements, including the perimeter seconds/minute scale, the central second and minute hands and the 12-hour totalizer hand located at 3 o’clock. The latter subdial retains Panerai’s signature rounded open Arabic numerals, while the rest of the dial design is dedicated to the classic diver-style indexes.

Like other members of the Submersible family, the two broad, skeletonized hour and minute hands are sword-style, adding an aggressive touch and excellent legibility. To differentiate it from the more standard model, the J. Chin Xperience Edition adds a gradient that darkens towards the edge, going from grey to black. For the sake of cleanliness and visual balance, both timepieces rightly dispense with the date function.

The Jimmy Chin Edition Submersibles beat to the rhythm of the P.9100 manufacture calibre, a self-winding flyback chronograph with two barrels offering a 72-hour power reserve. Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), it has a column wheel and vertical clutch.

Along with a titanium buckle, both watches come with two straps. The first is a combination of rubber and grey technical fabric. The second is a grey fabric with blue stitching, made from recycled plastic. The standard J. Chin edition is limited to 100 pieces, while the more exclusive J. Chin Xperience edition is limited to only 14 pieces. The former is priced at $19,400 (don’t look for them on Panerai’s website in English, as they don’t even appear), while the Xperience edition goes up to an unexpected $43,200. If the difference between the two watches is only the DLC finish, the ceramic bezel and the gradient of the dial, we can deduce that a large part of that $24,000 will pay for the “excursion” to Jackson Hole associated with the edition.
