As you well know, the postponed Tokyo 2020 games will be held this year starting next July 23rd in an edition again marked by the pandemic. Japan is in a state of emergency, and restrictions will affect the world’s most recognized sporting event: the government confirmed that there will be no spectators in stadiums and venues. In July 2019, a year before what we all expected to be the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, Omega , following the tradition as official Olympic partner and timekeeper since 1932 and for the 29th time, announced the first special edition watches dedicated to the Games, one of them a steel version of the Seamaster Aqua Terra with a blue dial whose design was inspired by the official logo. Now, just weeks before the inauguration, Omega has unveiled a new pair of commemorative watches, the Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial Master Chronometer Tokyo 2020 in yellow gold, which revisits the dial from two years ago.

Available in two versions of 38 mm and 41 mm, the cases of these new Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Tokyo 2020 models are made of yellow gold and maintain the standard geometry of the Aqua Terra. But the most interesting thing is its ceramic dial (note the discreet ZrO2 inscription under the central axis): taking blue as its color, it adopts a laser pattern in the shape of a distorted chessboard that reproduces the emblem of these Olympic Games. But it also seems to have been made on purpose for the aquatic inspiration of the Aqua Terra family, as it reminds me of the view of the tiles at the bottom of a swimming pool. Both models sport a Tokyo 2020 Olympic emblem printed on their sapphire backgrounds. Like the standard Aqua Terra, these models have a more than acceptable water resistance of 150 meters.

The indications respect the basic ones consisting of central hands for hours, minutes and seconds completed with a date window at 6 o’clock. While the hands are identical for both references, the hour indices applied on the 41 mm dial are triangular, while those on the 38 mm are ovoid.

, the former receives a minute and seconds scale transferred in white on the perimeter flange (absent on the smaller version) and a trapezoidal date window (round on the 38 mm). These slight changes give them a different personality, more sporty and masculine on the 41 mm, more elegant and feminine on the 38 mm. The hour indices receive the same Super-LumiNova treatment as the hands and minute scale

Both versions of the Seamaster Aqua Terra Tokyo 2020 in yellow gold use the same Super-LumiNova treatment for the hands and minute scale.

The coaxial self-winding manufacture movements. Omega equips the 41 mm model with the 8901 calibre, while the 38 mm model receives the 8801 movement. Both have a similar overall architecture and finish, sharing a bridge and striking rotor in Sedna gold and decorated with Omega’s typical arabesque version in Côtes de Genève. The 8901 and 8801 also share Omega’s coaxial escapement design, and both are certified as Master Chronometers by METAS, guaranteeing the highest standard of precision, performance and magnetic resistance in the Swiss industry.

In contrast, while the 8801 uses a single barrel, the 8901 implements two. Despite this, the power reserve is surprisingly similar: if the 8901’s double barrel offers 60 hours, the 8801 reaches 55 hours, both with a frequency of 25,200 vibrations per hour. In addition, the 8901 adds a jumping hour hand function for easy adjustment when entering a new time zone
