New brands are very rare in the tech horizon. After his departure from OnePlus, Carl Pei joined forces with Akis Evangelidis to create Nothing. Since then, their communication has picked up on the codes of OnePlus’ origins with multiple teasers. By partnering with influencers like Casey Neistat, and by proposing a launch in partnership with Unbox Therapy, the brand aims at a target mixing lifestyle and geek.

Their first product is a pair of true wireless headphones with noise reduction. The Nothing brand wants to distinguish itself on three points: the design, the price and the technology. On the first point, the ear (1) are unique, with their transparent box and body. We are very far from a copy of AirPods, as it can be the case with competitors. If the tip has a similar curve to the Apple models, the body shows the entrails of each earphone. Their weight is ultra light, with 4.7 grams on the scale per earphone.

The case uses the same concept of transparency, but is more bulky than the AirPods Pro. It’s compatible with wireless charging, uses a USB-C port, and offers a maximum battery life of 34 hours. Charging the ear (1) for 10 minutes allows 90 minutes of listening. As for autonomy, the earphones are announced as being able to last 5h30 in classic mode and 4h in active noise reduction mode.

Nothing ear (1) technology at the right price ?

Nothing uses 3 microphones for active noise reduction, in addition to the ear tips specific to the earphones. The application allows you to configure two levels of active noise reduction, a transparency mode, and an “Off” mode, which only uses the ear tips to reduce noise. Nothing has partnered with Teenage Engineering, a well-known brand in audio, for the sound part. The 11.6mm drivers are bulkier than the AirPods Pro, but we’ll have to test that on a daily basis. It is the Bluetooth 5.2 that ensures the connection with the smartphone, PC or any Bluetooth device.

The surface of each earphone is tactile, and allows to switch between the modes of noise reduction, to raise / lower the sound, to put pause and to change song. The software part is neat, especially thanks to the Nothing application, available on iOS and Android. It allows you to manage touch controls, use an equalizer, find the headphones if you lose them.

The real feat of Nothing is to offer such a concentrate of technology for only 99 euros. We have received our test copy, and will be sure to send you a copy. We’re going to give you a full review after several days of use. On paper, and in comparison with models like the Pixel Buds, the Nothing ear (1) seem to be well on their way to success thanks to their price-quality ratio. It remains to be seen if the AirPods Pro will finally have a real challenger.
