The Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 would fall into the category of watches sounded to the Only Watch 2021 that base their differential character in details of aesthetic nature, although this does not always imply that they are of a minor nature.

The basis of this unique piece that Montblanc has created for the Only Watch auction this year is clear from its name; it is the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph. This chronograph, which Montblanc launched in 2008, was later remodeled in 2018, just 10 years later. Interestingly this edition dedicated to the 2021 edition of the Only Watch, also coincides in “21” with the 200th anniversary of the launch in 1821 of the legendary chronograph created by Nicolas Rieussec.

Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch'21 - front

About the most recent version of the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Jordi Colomé spoke extensively in this article. As is logical, both the design and the geometry of all its elements are maintained with respect to the regular production Rieussec chronograph, but first we find a curious detail in its technical data. The case diameter decreases by 1.8 millimeters, from 44.8 to 43 mm. I don’t know the reason for this decrease, which although notorious, is not so noticeable as to change the character of the watch.

The second major difference between this Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 and the regular production model is the yellow gold chosen to make its case, which obviously differs greatly from steel, which is the only metal in which this watch is available. The choice of yellow gold alone gives it a decidedly luxurious character that is a far cry from the sobriety of steel.

This gleaming aesthetic also extends to its dial, where we note a base, also gold-plated, decorated with an elegant guilloché engraving. In various elements of this dial, the seconds hand, the bridge linking the counters and the figures of the date, we also find a reference to the orange tone, the corporate color of the Only Watch for this 2021.

Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch 21 - caseback

The perimeter of the case back is profusely engraved with the inscription “ONLY WATCH UNIQUE PIECE”. Through the transparent sapphire crystal of this caseback, we can admire the MB R200 calibre. In this movement we also find a differential detail, which consists of its oscillating weight, made in yellow gold and also decorated with a guilloché engraving.

So far, everything is quite conventional in the “Only Watch” concept of this Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21, but there is one aspect of it that, especially for a collector, will be more important than the watch itself. This is the “object” that Montblanc includes in the lot and consists of a functional replica of the original chronograph created by Nicolas Rieussec in 1821. The case, with dimensions of 176 x 150 x 80 millimeters, is made of walnut wood.

To complete the lot, Montblanc will invite the buyer of this lot of chronographs to a visit to its Swiss manufacture in Villeret, where apart from seeing live the incredible process that is followed to create the watches, you will meet the master watchmaker who has made your unique piece. Christie’s estimated price for the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 is EUR 30,000-45,000.
