Iliad Italy closed the first half of 2021 with 600,000 new users, achieving a turnover of €383 million and thus recording a growth of 22.9% compared to the same period in 2020.
After just three years in business, iliad highlights that it is at 7.8 million mobile users in Italy, for a 10% market share, thanks to the transparency and quality of its services. For the first time since its launch, iliad posted a positive half-year EBITDA (gross operating margin) net of leasing costs (EBITDAaL) of €6 million, reaching its break-even target just three years after its market launch.
Capital expenditure in the half year amounted to 200 million euros and the development of the mobile radio network continued with the achievement of 7,800 active sites, in line with the target of approximately 8,500 active sites by the end of this year.
Today, iliad Group announced that founder Xavier Niel plans to buy back minority shareholders and to exit the stock exchange with a simplified public offering, with the aim of accelerating the Group’s growth and supporting its long-term development strategy with greater independence.
Xavier Nie is currently the majority shareholder, as he owns 70.6% of the capital, but being in the financial markets imposes rules, in particular transparency on the company’s results.
Niel’s proposed price is €182 per share, a 61% premium over the share price at the close of yesterday’s session.
The company’s press release (PDF) hypes that the initiative was unanimously approved by Iliad’s board of directors. Xavier Niel, for his part, stresses that this action is necessary for “[the] rapid transformations and [the] significant investments” that will be made in the future. Iliad wants to become “the leader of telecommunications in Europe” and this exit from the financial markets should make it easier to achieve certain objectives. Thomas Reynaud, the current CEO of the group, specifies that the company aims in particular to “major investments in 5G and fiber”.
