Ever since its official detachment from Huawei, numerous rumors have been circulating regarding Honor Magic 3, the Asian company’s next top-of-the-line. No longer having to suffer the axe of the US ban, the former sub-brand can stand on its own two feet and make business deals with any entity. Goodbye Huawei HiSilicon chipsets, then, welcome third-party solutions, especially those marked Qualcomm. Because yes, the new Honor flagship will be one of the very first in the world to use the Snapdragon 888 +. But let’s see in more detail what will be the news of the smartphone.
Update 28/07: A new teaser video shows and confirms large sensors on Honor Magic 3. You can find all the news inside the article, in the “Camera” section.
Honor Magic 3: everything we know
Design and display
Since its inception, the Honor Magic series has stood out for using aesthetic stylings that are different from the market standards. We’ve seen it with an all-curved Honor Magic, a Magic 2 and its being a slider phone, and it will be the same with the Honor Magic 3. We still don’t know exactly how it will look as no images of any kind have been leaked yet. But to suggest us this hypothesis is the always reliable leaker Teme, according to which the smartphone will have the “classic magic design“. It’s not quite clear what he means.
To give us some more clues, however, could be the same Honor, which explained how the colors chosen for the new top range models. In fact, as CEO George Zhao announces, we will have colors inspired by the Golden Hour and Blue Hour, so a Pink Gold and a Dark Blue. And the same executive shows them to us during the conference for the first time live, although not really in sight, but confirming the colors mentioned. Seeing the renders that you find below among other things, it is possible that they will still be accompanied by a classic White and a classic Black.
Regarding the design, the leaker thinks of a look that recalls the first chapter of the range: perhaps the new flagship will adopt a double 3D curved glass (front / back). Almost certainly we will have a panel with high refresh rate, probably not below 120 Hz. Confirming the presence of the punch-hole is an advertisement on Chinese TV, in which we see the base model of Honor Magic 3. As you can see, the display is indeed curved and has a double punch-hole on the left side. According to rumors, we know that it should be a 6.76″ OLED panel (2772 x 1344 pixels).
This dual punch-hole configuration, according to rumors, would allow for an additional feature that we haven’t seen on any Android smartphone in a long time. I’m talking about a 3D facial recognition system, last seen on Huawei’s Mate series. The presence of a dual sensor would mean that the secondary one would take care of scanning through structured light, accurately mapping the user’s face.
In the first official teaser, we see a hint of the shapes that the Honor Magic 3’s camera should have. Based on these shapes, a new render has appeared on the net that would reveal to us 360° the shapes of the larger variant of Honor Magic 3, model Pro+. As proof of this design has also peeped an image that should show an official accessory: it is a protective case and thanks to the latter you can guess what could be the final design. It becomes more tangible the hypothesis of a camera with circular layout, with very generous dimensions. Obviously we’re waiting for the official renders for the final confirmation.
Hardware and camera
With thennuncio from Qualcomm, we found out that Honor Magic 3 Pro will be one of the first to be able to implement the new Snapdragon 888+. And this was also confirmed by Honor itself during the Global CEO Tech Talk event, announcing a great synergy with the American chipmaker.
Also made with 5nm manufacturing process, the chipset integrates an octa-core Kryo 680 CPU with increased speed to 3 GHz and an Adreno 660 GPU. Obviously, there is the Snapdragon X60 modem that provides dual SIM 5G support, in addition to not missing Wi-Fi 6 support and Bluetooth 5.2. We don’t know the memory sizes yet, but they will have LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1 formats and we almost certainly rule out microSD support.
As for the Magic 3 model instead, we expect the Snapdragon 888, as shown in the live image above. It will also be interesting to find out about the battery compartment, since with Honor 50 Pro we saw the introduction of 100W charging. We’ll see if it will be duplicated with the Magic 3 or if it will be further enhanced. As for the software, we learn that they will be equipped with Android 11 with the new Magic UI 5.0, firmware version later than 4.2 of the Honor 50, but still with Google services.
Another important point will be the camera compartment, of which we still know virtually nothing. We expect great things, however, given what Honor said: “The Snapdragon 888+ will unleash extraordinary image processing capabilities“.
And this would be confirmed by what will be the camera module of Honor Magic 3 Pro, which from a leak of Bald Panda seems to make use of 3 CMOS sensors rather large and therefore of great level. Confirming this indiscretion is an official teaser video (which you can find above thanks to Sparrow News) where not only the huge main sensor is shown, but also another really large secondary one. Since there are 3 of those mentioned in the leak, but the camera should be quadruple, we expect the other one to be revealed as well, but we’d like to keep that in mind.
Or waiting for official news.
Honor Magic 3 – Price and release date
first rumors about the release date had as common denominator the Q3 2021, often indicating August as the month designated to the presentation of the Magic 3 series. Well, Honor has finally unveiled its cards by announcing a Global event (also for us in Italy) set for next August 12, 2021, where there will be both the base model and the Pro model of the series. Here above you can find the letter written by George Zhao to announce the event.
The doubts still remain about the price even if finally some news arrive: obviously it refers to the Chinese market while for the Western figures we’ll have to be patient again. According to reports in the Asian media Honor Magic 3 will not be cheap at all: the base model will start from about 522 € at the exchange rate (ie 4,000 yuan) while the older brother Pro should go up to 5,000 yuan, 653 € at the exchange rate.
To draw a parallel, the Honor 30 series
starts at 2,999 yuan and goes up to 5,499 yuan for the 12/256GB Pro+ model. In short, we have yes an increase but as we have seen we should have even higher specs than the 30 range. ⭐️ Follow and support GizChina on Google News: click on the star to bookmark us.
