When Apple launched the HomePod in 2018, the Cupertino firm emphasized the audio quality of its connected speaker, while its competitors were mainly focusing on smart features and interoperability with as many services and connected products as possible. Moreover, regarding the price, the HomePod was not very competitive compared to Amazon and Google’s products.

Apple’s strategy did not bear fruit, since the HomePod never really hit the market. But in 2020, the firm seems to have made a 360-degree turn with the launch of theHomePod mini, and the end of the production of the HomePod.

Indeed, the HomePod mini is a more affordable product, and with its recent updates, Apple has also added more home automation features. On the other hand, the firm is slowly opening up its platform to third-party services.

Has Apple finally found the right formula?

And obviously, these changes have had an effect on sales. Indeed, as reported by the site 9to5Mac, a study conducted by the company Omdia indicates that during the second quarter of 2021, shipments of Apple’s connected speakers in the United States jumped by 180% compared to the same period in 2020.

Ironically, Omdia would estimate that the discontinuation of the first HomePod may have contributed to this sales increase. Indeed, upon hearing the news, Apple fans would have rushed to buy the remaining stock.

Either way, it looks like Apple is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to connected speakers. Its market share reportedly rose from 9.6% in the first half of 2020 to 21% in the first half of 2021. Shipments would have increased 245% year-over-year.

But Omdia also reportedly says that to continue boosting sales, Apple should release a new product: either a wearable speaker or one with a screen similar to Google’s Nest Hub and Amazon’s Echo Show speakers.

And that’s just it, there are already rumors circulating about it. In April, Bloomberg published an article indicating that Apple could develop a product combining the features of the Apple TV with those of the HomePod speaker and that would be equipped with a camera for video conferencing. Apple is also said to be thinking about a HomePod speaker with a screen, according to the source.

But of course, for the moment, as these are only rumors, caution is still required.
