Two watches, two totally groundbreaking concepts merge in the Streamliner Cylindrical Tourbillon, a unique piece made for the Only Watch charity auction: it adopts the architecture of the Streamliner case with integrated bracelet, adding the mechanics and dial of the Endeavour Cylindrical Tourbillon. And if that wasn’t enough, it uses my admired Vantablack for the dial.

The Streamliner case

H. Moser & Cie. deservedly won the award in the chronograph category of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2020 with the Streamliner Flyback Chronograph. Based on a beautiful steel cushion case with integrated bracelet and the fascinating AgenGraphe caliber, the Streamliner collection debuted with this spectacular vintage chronograph that is undoubtedly one of the best pieces I’ve seen in recent years, while the three-hand version was released a few months later.

With a monobloc structure and designed in the shape of a cushion, the titanium case has a diameter of 40 mm and a thickness of 10 mm (without the sapphire), the same size as the Streamliner Centre Seconds linked above. It is characterized by the absence of a bezel and the pronounced curvature of its radial brushed-finish upper plane, which flows into the integrated lugs and bracelet.

Tourbillon with cylindrical spiral, inclined hour subdial… and Vantablack.

But it is the strongly domed sapphire that sets the tone for this watch, a domed shape inherited from the Endeavour Cylindrical Tourbillon also presented last year, the result of a collaboration with MB&F. This crystal protects the three-dimensional dial defined by the one-minute flying tourbillon with cylindrical balance-spring, which rises at the 12 o’clock aperture and accompanies the sapphire hour and minute subdial, positioned at 6 o’clock and inclined at 40 degrees to face the wearer’s eyes. This disc is mounted on a bevel gear train that ensures optimal transmission of torque from one plane to the other.

To highlight both components and free them from any distractions, H. Moser has decided to coat the dial with Vantablack, the darkest substance in existence. It is composed of juxtaposed carbon nanostructures and has the particularity of absorbing 99.965% of incident light. Our eyes need reflected light to be able to perceive what we are
observing, so the Vantablack is perceived as an absence of matter, a black hole.

As with most watches that use this substance, the result is fascinating. With its Streamliner case and bracelet, domed crystal, cylindrical tourbillon and sloping dial, this unique piece is well worth the figure the organizers expect it to fetch at auction: between 60,000 and 80,000 Swiss francs.

The Streamliner Cylindrical Tourbillon Only Watch will be on display in Monaco during the Monaco Yacht Show, which will take place from 22 to 25 September 2021. The Only Watch 2021 collection will be shown on a tour
in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the USA before the Geneva auction on 6 November 2021.
