a time when the unofficial Grand Theft Auto VI is still being talked about, Grand Theft Auto V – GTA V to its friends – continues week after week to top the podium of the best selling games. How, after more than eight years on the market and three generations of consoles, does Rockstar Games’ game still stir up so much passion?
Grand Theft Auto V is no longer just a gigantic open-world game awarded by the press and acclaimed by gamers, it is also astronomical figures and records by the dozen. In the course of 2018, the game became the highest-grossing entertainment product of all time; it had recorded nearly $6 billion in revenue alone, while James Cameron’s Avatar movie got away with “only” a total of $2.8 billion. At the end of the same year, this fifth opus became the second video game to cross the 100 million sales mark (the first being Minecraft). In 2019, the production tallies more than 523 million hours viewed on Twitch and by December 31, 2020, the title sells a total of 140 million copies worldwide. You guessed it, the success of the game first released in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is insatiable and it’s not about to stop. The game is set to be released on November 11, 2021 on next-gen consoles
(PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S) with a few new features, which will no doubt attract new fans. But how to explain such a success?

now-ubiquitous saga has always been a talking point. Since 1997, when the first game was launched, the series has attracted the wrath of outraged parents and upset politicians by offering players the chance to play as an anti-hero on the wrong side of the fence. He can either fulfill contracts for evil gang leaders or spill blood on the city streets in complete freedom. Of course, it’s this second point that has caused the most controversy, but it’s also what has seduced the players. It must be said that being able to do anything and everything in a gigantic metropolis is a rather tempting program. This is the concept that the Houser brothers, the fathers of the series, decided to develop over the years and productions until reaching a climax in 2004 with the arrival of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
, an episode that, even today, continues to seduce a new audience. In San Andreas, everything is possible: ride around town on a bike or in a car, customize it, play money games, get involved in gang wars, race cars, invest in an apartment, go shopping, work out, play basketball and so on. In order to repeat the success of San Andreas, Rockstar Games, with Grand Theft Auto V, chooses to push this cursor even further.
The fifth episode of this flagship saga was delivered in 2013 with a Solo with substantial content. In addition to a long main storyline revealing three charismatic and finely studied playable characters to suit both newcomers and old fans (Franklin still has a little air of C.J., the hero of San Andreas), the title reveals infinite possibilities or almost. You’ll find everything that made the charm of the 2004 episode, i.e. a great freedom, a huge map and a lot of activities. From now on, in addition to being able to freely visit a Los Angeles (renamed Los Santos for the occasion) that is truer than nature, it is also possible to explore the ocean floor, play tennis and even play golf. All of these attributes made GTA V a great game that could already keep players busy for hundreds of hours, but that was without counting on the arrival of a multiplayer mode.

two weeks after the initial release of Grand Theft Auto V, this multiplayer mode entitled Grand Theft Auto: Online achieves the feat of transposing the GTA recipe into an ever-changing world where many players (16 players on seventh-generation consoles, then 30 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One) can accomplish anything they can think of. Climb the highest mountain in Los Santos and then speed down it on a motocross bike, skydive, contemplate the Californian city from the top of the Ferris wheel, customize your car, rob a shop, steal a submarine… all this is possible. As you can see, the only limit for players here is their imagination. That’s probably why aficionados keep coming back to this virtual world that promises completely different experiences from one session to the next. But even the most ingenious eventually get bored. That’s where regular updates come in.
In the first few months, the game experience lacked content, but soon, in order to ensure the loyalty of its community, Rockstar Games enriched its proposition by unveiling new possibilities such as being able to organize your own robberies or even create illegal businesses with friends. Months have passed and Grand Theft Auto V’s online mode has even ended up offering yachts, a casino and a brand new island located southeast of Los Santos. The latest major update, which was released late last year, includes new missions, additional weapons and vehicles, including a heavily armed submarine, and a batch of 100 new songs to accompany your nightly drives in a beautiful Italian car.

, so and so! Like
Bethesda and its The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Rockstar Games is not the only one responsible for the success of its game. In fact, with the launch of Grand Theft Auto V on PC in 2015, players made the title their own by enriching it with new content thanks to modding (an action that consists of modifying or adding elements not planned by the developers in a game). This translates into the arrival of a hundred mods, each one crazier than the last. Some of them allow you to take control of Iron Man’s HulkBuster, while others modify car markings to add a little extra realism, considerably increase the number of outfits or even add animated characters.
ons of our trio of heroes. More courageous modders have gone even further by completely modifying the visual aspect of the software or by proposing Role Play servers.
course, it is these servers that contribute to the longevity of the game today.
These unofficial servers – allowing you to create your character entirely (physique, character, profession) and to embody it to perfection – have accentuated the social dimension of the production and given a little youthfulness to an aging recipe. Initially used by a handful of insiders in the video game world, GTA V RP, thanks to its crazy concept and popular streamers who dwelt on the subject, quickly increased its popularity and surpassed the master. A surge in attendance
was felt throughout 2019, but it wasn’t until last April that the phenomenon exploded. On that date, the Role Play mod registered a peak of 250,000 players on Steam, far surpassing the original game, which settled for a peak of 124,000 players over that same period.
But in the end, what favors this success is perhaps simply the arrival of new generations of players (the game is almost 10 years old), but also the absence of direct competitors on the market. In the days of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, or rather in the PlayStation 2, Xbox era, many open-world games were accessible. We remember the Just Cause saga, which today is no longer surprising, True Crime, which first offers you to evolve in a gigantic Los Angeles and then, in a second time, in a reconstructed New York, Saints Row or even The Getaway… Today, except for the Watch Dogs series which doesn’t really play in the same league, Grand Theft Auto V has no equivalent and it could even be like that until the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI which, according to the latest rumours, could see the light of day between 2024 and 2025

reasons for this success are obviously multiple. The first and most obvious one is that Grand Theft Auto V is an excellent game that is full of content and possibilities for solo players. Its unique and evolving multiplayer mode is not to be outdone, as it has retained its audience over the long term by constantly unveiling new features. And the arrival of the PC version, taken over by budding modders, has further increased the popularity of the title, which crosses the different console generations with disconcerting ease.
