The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Ti 230 is a very special watch because of three factors: the one that affects its raison d’être, the material from which it is made and its method of distribution.

The Laureato Absolute Ti 230 would not need any specific raison d’être or external factor to see the light of day, but we are at a stage in the watch industry where it seems inappropriate to present a watch without “justification”. Particularly I do not think so, but those who are in charge are the marketing managers of the brands. The excuse, which I repeat I do not think necessary, for the appearance of the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Ti 230 is to celebrate the 230th anniversary of the legendary Swiss watchmaker.

Very few brands in the watch industry, or any industry for that matter, can boast such longevity, which deserves all the respect in the world, but what will matter most to future owners of the Laureato Absolute Ti 230 is the material from which its case is made; titanium. With these two factors we have already justified the terms Ti and 230 in its official name.

Girard-Perregaux SIHH 2019 Laureato Absolute Automatic

The Laureato Absolute, presented at the 2019 SIHH show (article), is Girard-Perregaux’ s biggest bet in the most recent decades. It is an entire collection whose DNA is that of an all-purpose watch with a strong sporty character. In 2019, right from the start, three levels of complication were presented in this new collection: the classic three-hand “hour only”, the world hours and the chronograph. So far, everything normal and characteristic of a new collection of importance, but what surprised was the presentation exts the first timepiece in this collection.

Girard-Perregaux decided to launch this collection only with a titanium case coated with a black PVD treatment. This is surprising, as it is more usual to present a collection of this type with a steel or untreated titanium case, which gives the watches great aesthetic versatility. By contrast, this PVD treatment, or any black material, exponentially increases the sporty character at the expense of diminishing its versatility.

Over time, Girard-Perregaux has introduced other case versions of the Laureato Absolute, such as those in carbon fibre, but they have always retained the extreme character given by the black colour. Now, finally, with the Laureato Absolute Ti 230, Girard-Perregaux offers those of us who are passionate about the brand and those who will be, a much more versatile option of this impressive watch; the untreated titanium with which its case is made.

You all know the advantages of titanium, which in addition to its anti-allergic and anti-corrosion characteristics, offers the same hardness of steel with a weight reduced by half. These physical qualities are very important, but there is also another factor, purely aesthetic, which in practice becomes transcendental; versatility.

Many buyers of high-end watches have a more or less extensive collection, including watches of every character, and choose the one that best suits their circumstances. However, what most buyers are looking for when they reach this level of investment is a watch that is appropriate in any environment or occasion. At the very least, one that doesn’t clash. Well, something as simple as using titanium without further treatment to make its case, gives the Laureato Absolute the touch of versatility it was lacking.

Anyway, let’s not fool ourselves. Living up to its “Absolute” appellation, the forceful geometry of the case of the watches in this collection was designed to exude an almost extreme sporty character and this does not change with the titanium but, as the images reveal, it is softened.

The dimensions, 44 millimetres in diameter and 14.65 millimetres thick, are the same as for the other Absolute watches. It also maintains its great tightness of 30 ATM. Lest anyone forget that this is a rather radical sports watch, Girard-Perregaux opted to apply a sandblasted finish to the titanium of the case of the Laureato Absolute Ti 230, something that always reinforces the instrumental character of a watch.

Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Ti 230 - Rubber Alloy strap

As you may have already noticed from the images above, Girard-Perregaux offers two versions of the Laureato Absolute Ti 230, which are differentiated by the color of its dial; blue or gray. The rubber strap that equips this Laureato is the same color as the corresponding dial. One detail to note is that the strap, which Girard-Perregaux calls Rubber Alloy, incorporates titanium in its construction, a world first that GP boasts. Apart from the images of the construction of these straps, at the moment it is not specified what this rare “alloy” of rubber and titanium consists of, only that it uses FKM rubber, a special type of this material that provides greater flexibility and strength.

The third factor that characterizes these Laureato Absolute with titanium case concerns its production and distribution policy. On the first aspect, Girard-Perregaux limits the production of the Ti 230 to only 230 units for each dial color version.

During the first, lasting one month, it will only be offered through the ten German boutiques of the prestigious watch chain Wempe, as well as in its outlets in New York and London. After this initial period, the model will be available at all authorized Girard-Perregaux retailers and through its website.
