Yes, you read that right, Ariana Grande concerts in Fortnite. If you’re from my generation you already have grey hair and, therefore, you’ll remember that games when we were kids were limited to a set of pixels that were distinguished to perfection, in which the genius of their creators made up for the enormous limitations and shortcomings of the environment as best they could. If they had told us that a few decades later we would see this, we probably wouldn’t have believed it.

In a conversation between colleagues of MuyComputer, Isidro Ros made a reflection that I share completely, and is that we are a lucky generation, very lucky, because we have lived the boom and the evolution of computing. From Spectrum, Amstrad, MSX, etc. to the systems we use today there is an evolution that, by size and effects, we can qualify as a revolution. And this is something that can be seen with nostalgia, of course, but it is also more than recommendable to do it with a huge optimism: first for having lived it, and second to continue seeing how it advances.

And although personally I’m not much of a Fortnite fan (I’ve tried it on a couple of occasions but I’m not hooked), it’s undeniable that we’re talking about a game that has managed to give a twist to the online game formula. It wasn’t the first, of course, and it’s not the only one, but it has undoubtedly earned a prominent position among an audience, usually quite young, which in some cases is capable of staying up all night (as some of us did back in the day) repeating, cyclically, an intergenerational and multipurpose crutch: “Last one and I’m gone”.

And in this story of new ideas that debuted in 2017 now adds a new milestone, and that is that throughout this weekend Fortnite will host the Rift Tour event of the singer Ariana Grande, in which the artist will give five mini concerts (about 15 minutes long each). A pop star concert in a game is, as I said before, something I would have been totally incapable of imagining growing up.

And yet Fortnite is scoring this in an event that has already begun and whose first show will take place in just under two hours, with the change from Friday to Saturday in the Spanish peninsular time. The following events will take place at 8pm tomorrow (Saturday), 6am on Sunday, 4pm on Sunday and midnight on Monday. All events will be similar, according to Fortnite officials, and will take place on the island.

If you are a Fortnite user and want to attend any of these events (or several, there are no limits in this regard) you can register in advance but, beware, this does not mean that you have a guaranteed place. The organization expects the servers to be saturated and they recommend players to log in one hour before the start of the concert to guarantee their attendance. And it is expected that the attendance is massive.

It’s not the first time Fortnite has hosted a concert, in April last year rapper Travis Scott brought together around 12 million Fortnite players in an event that marked a before and after for the platform and those responsible for it. DJs such as Deadmau5 and Steve Aoki have also performed on the virtual stage. In all cases, and in this one it will be the same, attendance at the concert is completely free.

Personally I think it’s a huge success, an action that serves to demonstrate once again how far games have come and a sign that online spaces like the one created by Fortnite are much more versatile than we tend to think. And as for Ariana Grande, if you don’t know her, I recommend you watch this video of her appearance on Saturday Night Live. For me, ever since I saw it, I’ve deeply admired her.
