One of the main goals that China has set for itself in terms of technology is undoubtedly self-production. And maybe, never as this time, we are really there: in fact, the first Chinese PC processor, the Loongson 3A5000, has been produced without foreign licenses but especially without US licenses.

understand this processor, you have to understand why it is important for China. In fact, it is the first product made with a totally Chinese instruction set, with no foreign licenses and even more, no US licenses. Moving on to the Loongson 3A5000, we find a Quad-Core clocked between 2.3 and 2.5 GHz. It uses a 64-bit GS464V microarchitecture produced by Loongson itself.
The memory controllers used are DDR-3200 Mhz, with a dedicated encryption system. In addition, it also uses 4 HyperTransport 3.0 SMP controllers that allow multiple processors of the same type to operate in a single system, like Intel Xeon or AMD Epyc. It is already on the market on notebooks, industrial solutions and some server applications.
As for performance, the Loongson 3A5000, which we recall is produced directly alongside the LoongArch
instruction set and no longer with the one licensed from MIPS Technologies, has managed to be up to 20% more efficient than the previous American ISA, but also 50% faster than the previous 3A4000. To give you an idea, we have performance equal to the first generation Ryzen or the 6th Generation Intel Core.
In short, is it possible that this is a first step to see even high-performance smartphone chipsets made entirely in China? We’ll find out in the near future.
