One of the biggest surprises among A. Lange & Söhne ‘s mid-year releases is the return of the Langematik Perpetual (the other is a Handwerkskunst in an unusual rectangular case ). Launched two decades ago, the Langematik Perpetual is the brand’s longest-running model. Having discontinued the gold and platinum versions, Lange introduced a limited edition in Honey Gold in 2019, and nothing else, until now. The Langematik Perpetual returns with a splendid dark blue dial in two case versions: white or rose gold.

Due to the gap of those two years, the reintroduction of the Langematik Perpetual has caught us by surprise. In fact, the 2019 edition seemed like the farewell reference, or so its case in Honey Gold, the proprietary alloy that Lange used to reserve for special occasions, such as the recent 175th anniversary “Homage to FA Lange”, seemed to indicate. But if we broaden the perspective, the revival of the Langematik Perpetual makes a lot of sense from a historical point of view, as this year marks the 20th anniversary of the model: the brand’s first perpetual calendar and the first perpetual calendar wristwatch to adopt a large date window.

Only 50 pieces of both versions will be produced, which means they will sell out quickly. But given its astonishing comeback, it would not be surprising to see it again in the collection in the near future.

Gold case, traditional blue dial

The Langematik Perpetual has an attractive design characteristic of the brand’s house style: a simple and robust cylindrical case, combined with a classic dial. The adjustment and correction elements are all located in the case middle. At 3 o’clock, in its most conventional position, the crown, with its fluted contour, is used for winding and adjusting the hours and minutes. The second correction element is in the form of a push-piece at 10 o’clock, which can be used to simultaneously correct all the perpetual calendar displays. Finally, three additional recessed pushers allow individual adjustment of the day of the week, month and moon phase displays.

The design of the blue dial is harmonious and proportionate, offering optimal legibility considering the large number of indications. One of the details to be highlighted is the radial guilloché on the perimeter ring, which highlights applied Roman numeral hour markers and gives the dial an aspect in secotres that increases its depth. This decoration is not found on previous Langematik Perpetual models, being implemented for the first time on the 2019 Honey Gold version.

The functions of the perpetual calendar are arranged on twin spiral subdials: the days of the week and the day/night indicator in blue and white are at 9 o’clock, while the month and the small leap year indicator can be read at 3 o’clock. At 6 o’clock we find the moon phase, a complication that will only require a one-day adjustment every 122.6 years, which is accompanied by a small seconds hand. Like the indexes, all the hands and the double frame of the large date window take the metal of the case as a material for its construction.

Calibre L922.1

But the star of the watch is the Calibre L922.1, the same mechanism based on the self-winding Sax-O-Mat that beat at the heart of the first Langematik Perpetual in 2001. This mechanism has a couple of really useful functional details. The first is that the second hand is reset to zero the moment we pull the crown to synchronize the time, which greatly facilitates this operation and increases its accuracy. Secondly, if a perpetual calendar stops working due to the exhaustion of its power reserve, they are not easy to reset; some require a lot of manipulation by means of small pushers built into the integrated case. But to make it easier for us, A. Lange & Söhne includes a special pusher that simultaneously advances all the calendar information by one day. So, if our Langematik Perpetual stops working for four days, to reset the perpetual calendar we only have to press the advance button four times.

With its diameter of 30.4 mm and a thickness of only 5.7 mm, the movement features an off-centred bi-directional rotor (smaller than a normal rotor but larger than a micro-rotor), crafted in gold and a platinum perimeter ring. Thanks to its diameter and location, we can enjoy the exquisite and impeccable decoration at all times. Beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), its power reserve reaches 46 hours.
