Sony’s PlayStation 5 is off to a great start. Nine months after its launch, it has become Sony’s best-selling console in that time.

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is undoubtedly Sony’s best-selling console, ahead of the PlayStation 4, which didn’t do as well in its first nine months on the market. As hard as ever to find in stores, PS5 stocks are almost immediately snapped up when they hit the shelves. As a result, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold more than 10 million units of the console to date.

I can’t express enough how grateful we are to our passionate community of PlayStation fans who have embraced the PS5, and to our partners who are delivering such incredible gaming experiences on our platforms,” commented Jim Ryan, head of SIE.

High demand to meet

He also acknowledged that Sony has a lot of work to do to meet the high and partly unmet demand: “While the PS5 has reached more homes faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for the PS5 continues to outstrip supply. I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges around the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for EIS.”

Sony will also be able to rely on the future arrival of some very popular licenses on PlayStation 5 to continue to fuel that demand, including God of War, Gran Turismo and Horizon. Among the PS5 games already released, one of the most successful is undoubtedly Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and its 6.5 million copies sold. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, launched on June 11, has already sold over 1.1 million copies.
